About Survey of India (SoI)

The Survey of India (SoI) is the oldest scientific government organization in India, established in 1767. It serves as the nation’s premier surveying and mapping authority under the Department of Science & Technology, Government of India playing a pivotal role in the development of infrastructure, defense, and scientific research. Survey of India bears a special responsibility to ensure that the country’s domain is explored and mapped suitably, provide base maps for expeditious and integrated development and ensure that all resources contribute with their full measure to the progress, prosperity and security of our country now and for generations to come.

With a history spanning over 250 years, SoI has been instrumental in mapping and defining India’s geographical boundaries. Its work includes, establishment of robust survey network built on scientific principles under Great Trigonometrical Survey (GTS), to maintain and update the geodetic framework of the country, Geodetic research & surveys, Topographical surveys and mapping, Development and Forest surveys for civil and military purposes etc. The GTS survey framework was extensively used in determining the height of Mount Everest and providing vital information on the Indian subcontinent’s geographical features.

SoI has embraced new technologies like Aerial surveying, Stereo photogrammetry, Lidar , High resolution satellite imagery, UAVs or Drones for high resolution mapping and digital terrain data generation to cater for the multidisciplinary geospatial data requirements in the country. It also uses latest GNSS technology and modern cartography tools to enhance the accuracy and reliability of its data. The shift towards digitization has allowed SoI to create digital maps and data layers, aiding various e-governance projects.

As India’s apex geospatial organization, SoI works closely with government bodies, industries, and academic institutions. Its data and expertise influence policy-making in areas like infrastructure development, defense strategy, disaster management, and environmental protection. SoI also represents India at international geospatial forums, contributing to global mapping and surveying standards.

Core Functions

  • Mapping & Surveying: SoI’s primary function is to conduct topographical surveys, which provide detailed information about the terrain, physical features, and boundaries of India. These maps are crucial for planning, development, defense, and natural resource management.
  • Geodetic Observations: The organization is responsible for geodetic and geophysical surveys, which involve precise measurement of the Earth’s surface. This data is used in defining and establishing the horizontal and vertical geodetic framework of the country.
  • Country wide CORS Network: SoI has established the CORS network of more than 1050 CORS stations across the country. This network is used by all stakeholders including Government, Private and Academia users for Real time Network RTK services for precision position measurement. This position infrastructure enables easier, faster, cost effective and precise position data capturing for urban planning, Infrastructure development, Cadastral surveys, Topographical mapping, Environmental conservation, and disaster management activities.
  • Digital Topographical data for Geographic Information System (GIS) Solutions: In the digital era, SoI has been offering digital topographical data required for providing GIS-based solutions, offering real-time data for better analysis, planning, and monitoring. These data services support sectors like agriculture, transport, land management, rural development etc.
